Western Pulse Growers Association Annual Meeting, Dec. 12

The 53rd Annual Meeting for the Western Pulse Growers Association (WPGA) will be held on Wednesday, December 12 in Moscow, Idaho at the University Inn Best Western Plus.  The meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m., and end with a hosted reception at 4:30 pm.  A special Lentil Family of the Year lunch is provided as well, featuring guest speaker Paul Shapiro of The Better Meat Co. Shapiro will discuss his company ’s efforts plant-meat blending efforts and how pulse growers can capitalize on this trend.  Following lunch, there will be a food bank focus featuring a panel of experts including USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Administrator, Bruce Summers; and, Sarah McPherson from Second Harvest food banks.  This is a critical topic for today’s pulse industry, as the USDA-AMS is currently purchasing U.S. dry peas, lentils, and canned chickpeas en masse for the Section 32 / tariff relief programs, targeted for distribution to food banks across the nation.

Another critical topic is the current trade war and its effect on the pulse industry.  The WPGA invited Mark Freeman of Freeman Global, an expert in international trade to discuss U.S. trade and the Pacific Northwest’s reactions to retaliatory sanctions and tariffs.

WPGA staff mailed out registration forms to all members, or you can download the form HERE. Filled out forms should be mailed back to the office by Monday, December 3.
